Palmetto Dunes Hilton Head
Resort Vacationing

Why Palmetto Dunes Hilton Head for your vacation....?

Its quite simple really. Its one of the finest resorts on the Island where you can enjoy a tranquil setting, a wealth of activities and amenities.

Palmetto Dunes Resort was my initial exposure to resort style vacationing in my first trips to Hilton Head. I honestly did not know what to expect. The vast amount of information and reviews were not readily available as they are now.

But I took the chance.....and I'm glad I did.

Although I visited other resorts on the Island over the years, Palmetto Dunes is still one of my favorites. While smaller than Sea Pines Resort, it sits on three miles of pristine Atlantic Ocean beachfront and sprawls across 2,000 acres. Plenty of space to accommodate all its amenities.

One of Palmetto Dunes' main features is a private 11-mile lagoon to enjoy kayaking, canoeing and fishing. Nature lovers can enjoy over 40 species of birds and fish in their natural surroundings on this ecologically-friendly resort.

Accommodations

Palmetto Dunes has first class accommodations, hosting two major hotels and a combination of villas and private homes.

With plenty to choose from, the villas in Palmetto Dunes are separated into complexes that include ocean front villas, golf course villas and lagoon view villas. Many of these villas are complimented with community swimming pools and tennis courts.

Golf

Palmetto Dunes Hilton Head offers golfing packages with a variety of golfing and resort benefits. Boasting three world-class golf courses, each course prides itself on unique design and challenges.

  • Robert Trent Jones Oceanfront Course has a distinct hole, known as the Par five 10th hole that offers golfers unparalleled views of the Atlantic Ocean. The course was rated number one by readers of Golfweek Magazine.
  • Arthur Hills Course features 10 holes on the water to challenge the player's precision. A picturesque golf course, it stretches across rolling island dunes and is interspaced with Palmetto trees to provide much needed shade. Pro-golfers Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson have golfed at the Arthur Hills Course.
  • George Fazio Course holds the reputation of being the most challenging. It is considered one of the top 100 courses in the country and is the only Par 70 course on Hilton Head Island.

Tennis

Palmetto Dunes Hilton Head is home to the Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center. The tennis club provides players with 23 clay and 2 Nova pro-bounce courts. During the night, several of the courts have lights for after dark play. The resort offers catered tennis package vacations.

Biking

The surrounding area and resort are criss-crossed with over 50 miles of paved biking trails. There is a special pathway for bicyclists to ride to the Island's Shelter Cove Harbour and Marina. Resort guests can rent mountain bikes, beach bikes, tandem bikes or kiddie carts. Baby seats are also available for rental.

Watersports

Guests at Palmetto Dunes Hilton Head can go to Shelter Cove Harbour and Marina to enjoy a wealth of watersports. There are deep sea and inshore fishing charters available or guests can try their hand at a bit of sport crabbing.

Sailboat, jetski and power boat rentals are available. Resort guests may want to book a trip aboard one of the dinner cruise ships at the marina or just opt to take a leisurely nature sightseeing expedition. Guests can also rent kayaks and canoes for the resort's private lagoon.

Shopping

Across from Palmetto Dunes lies Shelter Cover Harbour and Marina, home to numerous trendy and upscale stores. Fashioned like a Mediterranean-style village, there are dining opportunities with cafes, outdoor grills and restaurants.

Guests may want to take a picture beside the sundial that is depicted as a 12-foot tall bronze statue of Neptune. Considered the world's largest figurative sundial, it has been in place at Shelter Cove Harbour since 1983.
